Photovoltaic 1.8GW, wind power 1.5GW! Spain to launch 3.3GW renewable energy tender

A few days ago, Spain’s Ministry of Ecological Transition (Miteco) revealed that a 3.3GW renewable energy tender will be held in November, including 1.8GW of solar and 1.5GW of wind, and the selected photovoltaic projects must be built within two years and will receive 12-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

This is the fourth tender held in Spain. As with previous renewable energy tenders, bidders will be required to submit a strategic plan with implications for local employment and supply chains.

It is understood that Miteco awarded 2.90GW of solar capacity and 3.25GW of wind capacity in the first two tenders held in January and October 2021. A total of 3.12 GW was awarded in the second auction, or 95% of the proposed 3.3 GW, with a total wind capacity of 2.258 GW and solar 866 MW at an average price of €30.56/MWh. In the third tender, launched last December, Spanish authorities aimed to allocate 500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity, including 140 megawatts of distributed solar.
