10MW/20MWh battery energy storage system successfully participated in the Belgian frequency regulation market

According to foreign media reports, the EStor-Lux battery energy storage system deployed in Bastogne, southern Belgium, was put into operation in December last year and fully launched commercial activities. The consortium backing the project said the energy storage system successfully participated in a grid frequency auction, providing 16GW of balancing capacity to date.

The 10MW/20MWh EStor-Lux lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) completed financial settlement in November 2020 and started full-scale commercial activities on December 9, 2021. The battery energy storage system in this project is built using energy storage technology and the sixth-generation Cube modular battery energy storage system provided by the integrator Fluence.

Northvolt plans to build 100GWh battery factory

According to foreign media reports, Swedish lithium-ion battery producer Northvolt has said it plans to acquire an abandoned paper mill site in Sweden, where it will develop and build a super factory for battery production, which will start producing 100GWh batteries by the end of 2024.

Northvolt will acquire from StoraEnso the Kvarnsveden pulp and paper mill in Borlange and surrounding industrial areas, which will close in 2021, and transform it into a gigafactory for living active materials and batteries.

The plant is expected to start operations by the end of 2024 and at full capacity will be able to produce 100GWh of batteries per year. The plant's output will help Northvolt supply battery products to all markets, including its Northvolt Systems plant where battery energy storage systems (BESS) are assembled.

UK government to fund 24 new hydrogen storage projects

As the UK accelerates its green transition and reduces its reliance on fossil fuels, the UK government has announced £6.7 million in funding for new hydrogen storage projects across the country to support the development of new energy storage technologies.

Twenty-four hydrogen storage projects across the UK have been awarded a first round of funding worth a total of £68 million through the Long Term Energy Storage (LODES) competition, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) revealed on 23 February.
