In order to continue to supply lithium batteries to Tesla (TSLA.US), Panasonic selects a new factory in the United States

The reporter was informed that Panasonic plans to build a new factory in the United States that will provide Tesla (TSLA.US) and possibly other electric car makers with next-generation lithium-ion batteries, and the company is currently negotiating a location.

It is reported that Panasonic will invest billions of dollars in the new plant and is currently considering several locations, including one in Oklahoma and the other in Kansas. The plant could start operations as early as 2024.

Panasonic plans to produce a newly developed, larger and more powerful "4680" battery at a new plant in the United States. Panasonic may also install other battery production lines at the new factory, though this will depend on customer demand.

Although still in its early stages, the plan marks a bold step for Panasonic. Despite facing high demand for batteries from Tesla, Panasonic has been slow to expand compared to rivals South Korea's LG Energy Solution and China's CATL.

Timings and budgets for Panasonic’s U.S. factories may be adjusted, and Panasonic is also weighing potential plant locations based on land and labor prices, as well as the availability of state subsidies, one of the people said.

A Panasonic spokesman said Monday that the company has not announced plans to build a new battery factory in the United States.
